You probably have heard the saying, “You are What You Eat.” This is true for chickens as well: they are what they eat. Non organic chickens are fed inorganic feed, which is very harmful for your hormones.
This is purposely done to meet growing demand. In fact, it takes around 3 months to grow a chicken to the size of a broiler. In order to do this, chickens feed is comprised of steroids, antibiotics, minerals, cholesterol, and arsenic. These additives make chickens grow to maturity in 1-½ months, thus cutting it in half.
Chickens likely raised with arsenic-based drugs result in chicken meat that has higher levels of arsenic, which was found to increase the risk of cancer, according to a new study led by researchers at the Johns Hopkins Center for a Livable Future at the Bloomberg School of Public Health.
The study, published online in the journal Environmental Health Perspectives gives us proof that the use of drugs containing arsenic in chicken populations can lead to some health issue.
In fact, commercial chicken meat can cause higher cholesterol levels and an imbalance in hormone levels. Most conventional chicken comes from factory farms with largely unsanitary and unhealthy conditions. These chickens are packed into cages which means they are likely to get sick. This is the reason they are given antibiotics for most their lives. Unfortunately, these antibiotics don’t go away and are deeply rooted in the conventional chicken meat.
Non organic Chicken Causes Hormonal Imbalance
According to a recent study, rats fed on inorganic feed exhibited severe hormonal issues . Whereas, rats fed on organic chicken feed did not have any issue producing their own natural progesterone hormone.
The scientists divided chickens into 4 groups to estimate growth rate and levels of progesterone, testosterone and estrogen after the treatment.
Group I was control rats fed on standard chow
Group II treated with commercial chicken feed
Group III rats fed with conventional chicken meat
Group IV with organic chicken meat for a period of 6 weeks
At the end of the treatment, scientists discovered that the intake of commercial chicken feed and commercial chicken could be the potential cause of development of polycystic ovary syndrome in females due to steroid hormonal imbalance.
