When I first heard of the amazing health benefits of Moringa, my jaw dropped. If you google moringa, you will see a lot of information about it as one of the most nutrient-dense, antioxidant-rich, healing foods on our planet. In fact, you won’t find another food nutritionally richer than Moringa.
Scientific studies prove that moringa is a powerhouse of nutritional value. Gram for gram, Moringa leaves have: 7 times the vitamin C in oranges, 4 times the Calcium in milk, 4 times the vitamin A in carrots, 2 times the protein in milk and 3 times the Potassium in bananas.
Moringa’s health benefits
Rich in Antioxidants
Moringa Oleifera leaves have been found to have exceptionally high antioxidant activity! These antioxidants include Quercetin, Chlorogenic acid, Vitamin C and Beta-carotene. Because of its unbelievably high antioxidant potency, Moringa can help with
- Heart disease
- Cancer
- Diabetes
- High blood pressure
Rich in amino acids
Moringa Leaves have 18 amino acids, eight of which are essential amino acids, making them a “complete” protein. In fact, it’s a great source of protein for vegetarians and vegans. And as we know, protein in needed to produce hormones and enzymes. Protein builds muscle, cartilage, bones, skin and blood.
Rich in Calcium and magnesium
One serving of moringa leaves gives your body around 125 percent of our RDI of calcium and 61 percent of our RDI of magnesium. These minerals work together; while calcium is essential for building strong bones and teeth, magnesium is needed for the absorption of calcium. Therefore, moringa helps with osteoporosis and other bone conditions.
A Strong Anti-inflammatory
Moringa has powerful anti-inflammatory properties, which makes it a great agent for arthritis, joint pain, rheumatism and edema etc.
Antibacterial, Anti-microbial, Anti-fungal and Anti-viral Action
Moringa has been used for centuries as an anti-bacterial/microbial/fungal/viral agent. It has been used to help with UTI, toothache, thrush, warts, parasites, HIV and herpes.
From a scientific research perspective of Jed W. Fahey (2005),
Subsequent elegant and very thorough work, published in 1964 as a PhD thesis by Bennie Badgett (a student of the well known chemist Martin Ettlinger), identified a number of glyosylated derivatives of benzyl isothiocyanate (e.g. compounds containing the 6-carbon simple sugar, rhamnose) (8). The identity of these compounds was not available in the referred scientific literature until “re-discovered” 15 years later by Kjaer and co-workers. Seminal reports on the antibiotic activity of the primary rhamnosylated compound then followed, from U Eilert and colleagues in Braunschweig, Germany. They re-isolated and confirmed the identity of 4-(α-L-rhamnopy-ranosyloxy) benzyl glucosinolate and its cognate isothiocyanate and verified the activity of the latter compound against a wide range of bacteria and fungi.
Moringa Boosts the Immune System
The ethanolic extracts of moringa leaf stimulates the immune system of the body. [study] The extract helps enhance the cellular immune response and exhibits positive results on other immune system values such as total leucocyte count, antibodies, and hypersensitivity reaction.
