A recent study published in the peer-reviewed journal Environmental Health found that maintaining optimal relative humidity indoors can kill the flu virus on surfaces and in the air.
Humidifiers Can Kill FLU VIRUS
According to author Dr. Ted Myatt, Sc.D., “A review of past peer-reviewed studies conducted over the last 70 years also showed that homes kept at 40-60% relative humidity-the optimal range-are likely to have fewer flu viruses lingering in the air and on surfaces like sink faucets, door handles, and countertops compared to lower relative humidity levels. The typical flu virus can survive in the environment at least 24 hours. In more humid environments, the virus survival time is markedly decreased. In order to reach an appropriate humidity level in your home, you need to consider the size of each room and your humidifier’s maximum moisture output.”
In a 2013 study, scientists were able to determine how long the virus lived at different levels of humidity after a cough simulator was used to send the flu virus into the air.
Up to 77% of the virus stayed viable in the air an hour later at humidity levels less than 23%
Around 14% of the virus remained viable an hour later at humidity levels greater than 43%
23 hours later, 100% of the viruses in the humid air were all dead, while 60 percent remained viable in dry conditions.
Buying a humidifier is perhaps the single greatest thing you can do for your health
- Higher humidity levels can kill off the virus. A good humidifier can help reduce the survival of flu viruses that may be in the air.
- Humidifiers help give you reprieve from coughing and congestion. Humidifiers can help nasal congestion. Adding moisture to the air can help to relieve sinus congestion by loosening up the mucus secretions of the nasal passages.
- Can Help You Sleep Better. By keeping your throat and nasal passages hydrated, humidifiers can help provide an optimal sleep environment. Adding a humidifier can magnify airflow quality better than your body can humidify on its own.
- Help break up mucus. The dryness can make mucous even harder to blow out or cough up. Using a humidifier can help relieve a stuffy nose and can help break up mucus.
There are many natural products that help your body increase immunity and overall health
