“Prescribing” fruits and veggies would save $100 billion in medical costs

You have probably heard  the famous quote by Hippocrates, “Let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food.” He recommended people to eat a nutrient-rich diet to prevent and treat diseases. We are what we eat. The foods we eat daily determine our health and wether will have diseases or not. Nutrients deficiencies and diets full of processed foods linked to all kinds of diseases including cancers.

In fact, John Hopkins University states that over 80 percent of cancer patients are believed to be malnourished, severely lacking certain nutrients.

Apple Cider Vinegar lowers blood sugar levels better than Metformin (a popular anti-diabetic medication). This is what I take daily - here

Did you know that more than 100,000 Americans die every year, from properly prescribed, properly taken prescriptions? Most pharmaceuticals have serious side effects because the molecules of pharmaceutical drugs are all foreign to the human body. Hence, the body can not metabolize them easily.

Chronic diseases  such as  heart disease, cancer, autoimmune diseases, allergies, asthma, dementia, depression, autism and more account for 80 percent of our health care costs. And yet we, as a nation, spend the most money on our health. Clearly, what we are doing is not working.

So maybe it’s time for doctors to prescribe vegetables and fruits instead?  According to a new study performed by the researchers at Tufts University “prescriptions” for fruits and vegetables  could save more than $100 billion in healthcare costs and prevent many chronic diseases.

The study, published in the the medical journal PLOS Medicine, monitored  people between the ages of 35-80 who had Medicare and/or Medicaid. These adults were divided into 2 groups. In the first group, Medicare/Medicaid covered the cost of 30% of fruits and vegetables,  and the other group was getting fruits, vegetables, seafood, whole grains, plant oils, and other healthy foods.

The study concluded that individuals in these groups relied less on healthcare. This simple change  can potentially prevent 3.28 million cardiovascular diseases, 620,000 deaths, 120,000 cases of diabetes–and save $100 billion.

In the end, all you need to do is eat your medicine and view  your grocery store as your pharmacy.
