Let’s look at the ingredients listed on a bag of Original M&Ms:
Ingredients. WHITE CHOCOLATE (SUGAR, COCOA BUTTER, SKIM MILK, MILKFAT, SOY LECITHIN, TOCOPHEROLS TO MAINTAIN FRESHNESS, NATURAL FLAVOR), PEANUTS, SUGAR, CORNSTARCH, LESS THAN 1.5% – PALM OIL, CORN SYRUP, DEXTRIN, COLORING (INCLUDES BLUE 1 LAKE, YELLOW 6, RED 40, YELLOW 5, BLUE 1), CARNAUBA WAX, GUM ACACIA.
So What’s The Problem?
•Soy lecithin: soy lecithin contains genetically modified soy, which has been found to cause decrease in pancreatic function of mice who were fed it.
A study from Johns Hopkins found that boys undergoing sexual development fed soy lecithin were at risk for potential long-term effects such as reproductive abnormalities.
The Dangers of Food Dyes
•Blue #1: Produces malignant tumors at the site of injection and by ingestion in rats. Possible effects include asthma, hives, hay fever, low blood pressure, allergic reactions. Caution is advised if aspirin sensitive.
•Red #40: Damages DNA, causes swelling around the mouth, hives, hyperactivity in children and cancer.
•Yellow #6: Can cause hyperactivity, allergic reactions, diarrhea, vomiting, nettle rash, migraines and swelling of the skin. The Center for Science in the Public Interest also reports that Yellow #6 dye is contaminated with known carcinogens.
•Yellow #5: Can cause allergic reactions, hyperactivity, cancer.
•Blue #2: Is a petroleum based product with a chemical formula of C16H10N2O2. It increases hyperactivity in children, increases brain tumors in lab rats and other abnormal cell development.
•Gum Acacia: Is a dietary fiber from the Acacia tree. It causes gas, bloating, nausea and loose stool.
Unfortunately, the Mars company has chosen to keep these artificial colors because the FDA has stated they are safe for human consumption.
Truthfully, even if M & M replaces all of their artificial dyes and colors with natural ones that haven’t been linked to various health problems, the main ingredient itself has an adverse effect on your body. Refined sugar leads to inflammation in your body.
