Use Banana leaves as natural packaging to reduce plastic use

February 28, 2020 by Anya Leave a Comment

Using banana leaves as packaging is not a new concept, they’ve been used by various cultures for centuries. From plates to packaging, banana leaves can replace plastic and commercial forms of packaging.

Dump the Plastic: Why Plastic is Bad for Your Health

Plastic food storage containers are loaded with various harmful chemicals. Plastics are made out of refined crude oil and contain hormone disrupting chemicals such as BPA (Bisphenol-A). BPA is used to make plastic more durable and flexible. Unfortunately, when we use plastic to heat or store food, chemicals from the container can leach into the food.

Research on laboratory animals have found that high doses of BPA disrupt reproductive development and functions. Additionally, some studies show that high BPA levels in humans can cause serious health issues including diabetes, heart disease and liver toxicity.

Use Banana Leaves Instead

Traditional Asian cultures such as Vietnamese, Thai and Indonesian have used banana leaves to wrap the cakes, chicken and fish for centuries. The banana leaves can give particular pleasant aroma that can increase our appetite. Foods wrapped in green banana leaves don’t absorb those nasty chemicals.

Rice or other foods wrapped in banana leaves for can last longer too since banana leaves possess some anti-microbial effects which can kill germs that cause foods to rot.
