Did you know that your laundry room is perhaps the most toxic room in your home? Conventional detergents and dryer sheets are loaded with toxic fragrances, cancer causing substances, and endocrine disruptors. In fact, each piece of laundry has toxic residues from detergents as these signature fragrances were designed to stay in clothes.
Many dryer sheets are loaded with fragrance and other chemicals that can cause asthma and disrupt hormones. In one study, researchers tested five name brand dryer sheets and discovered that the dryer sheets emitted 15 endocrine disrupting compounds that can affect nervous system, metabolism, and cancer.
IS SCENTED LAUNDRY DETERGENT TOXIC?
Scented laundry detergents and fabric softeners emit more than 25 volatile organic compounds (VOCs) per load, most of which are classified as hazardous air pollutants.
A recent study published in Air Quality, Atmosphere and Health finds that scented laundry products contain carcinogens that can raise cancer risk significantly.
These carcinogens include acetaldehyde and benzene. Benzene causes leukemia and other blood cancers, according to the American Cancer Society. Acetaldehyde has been found to cause throat and nasal cancers.
1,4-Dioxane is one of the most dangerous chemicals
Unfortunately, most popular laundry detergent brands contain 1,4-Dioxane. The EPA considers this chemical a human carcinogen, and states:
“1,4-Dioxane is used as a solvent. Acute (short-term) inhalation exposure to high levels of 1,4-dioxane has caused vertigo, drowsiness, headache, anorexia and irritation of the eyes, nose, throat, and lungs in humans. It may also irritate the skin. Damage to the liver and kidneys has been observed in rats chronically (long-term) exposed in their drinking water. In three epidemiologic studies on workers exposed to 1,4-dioxane, the observed number of cancer cases did not differ from the expected cancer deaths. Tumors have been observed in orally exposed animals. EPA has classified 1,4-dioxane as a Group B2, probable human carcinogen.”
How to Read Labels
Next time you shop for laundry products, pay attention at the the words “caution”, “warning”, “danger,” or “lung irritant” as it means that there are potentially toxic chemicals in the product. Try this natural detergent here
Detox your body
Take Spirulina to Detox Your Body Of Arsenic, Antibiotics, and Steroids
It’s loaded with minerals, enzymes, antioxidants and amino acids. It detoxes the body by flushing fluids from the cells and replacing them with all this good stuff in spirulina. Take one tablespoon of organic spirulina daily. (find it here)
Add the following to a warm bath:
½ cup spirulina, mixed in a pitcher of warm water (where to find)
½ cup sea salt
5 drops essential oil (I like to use a mixture of lime, bergamot and grapefruit). (where to find)
