Did you you there are many dangerous chemicals in mascara and they can end up on your skin, your eyes, and in the oil glands of your eyelids? In case you didn’t know, the United States has not passed a law to regulate the ingredients used in the beauty industry since 1938. Under current law, the FDA doesn’t require cosmetics companies to conduct safety assessments on their products. Toxic mascara ingredients can be easily masked under deceptive words like “fragrance.”
Let’s take a closer look at these toxic ingredients
Propylene Glycol
This ingredient is used to help mascara maintain its liquid form,. Propylene Glycol may cause skin irritation and allergic reactions in concentrations as low as 2 percent, and it is considered a toxic substance by the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry.

Retinyl Acetate (Vitamin A Acetate)
Found in many brands of mascara, this toxic mascara ingredient is ranked as a high concern by the EWG because it can lead to cellular level changes. Retinyl acetate can produce excess reactive oxygen species that interfere with cellular signaling and can even cause mutations in your genes. Side effects include developmental and reproductive toxicity, and organ system toxicity
Aluminum Powder
Rated as a high concern by the Environmental Working Group’s (EWG’s) Skin Deep Cosmetics Database for being a neurotoxin. Aluminum powder has been linked to interfere with a variety of cellular and metabolic processes in the nervous system and other tissues, says a study published in the journal of Pediatrics.
BHT and BHA
Butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT) and butylated hydroxyanisole (BHA) control the growth of microbes in mascara and other cosmetics. BHT, which EWG gave a score of (link), is classified as a respiratory irritant and is considered toxic or harmful to human organ systems. Studies have linked BHA with cancer.

Formaldehyde
Formaldehyde is used in mascara as a preservative and is a known carcinogen. It is often is labeled under different names such as DMDM, imidazolindyl urea, methenamine, diazuli dinyl urea, and quaternium-15.
Fragrance or “parfum”
Many nasty chemicals can hide under that umbrella, including phthalates, which are hormone disrupters and possible carcinogens.
