Did you know if you only drink distilled water, you definitely increase your risk of high blood pressure, heartbeat irregularities and muscle cramping. Why? Because distilled water is a type of water that has gone through a very vigorous filtration process to strip it of contaminants such as bacteria, viruses and toxic heavy metals like lead, arsenic, aluminum and mercury. However, it also strips it of vital minerals. In fact, in the 1950s distilled water was sold in drug stores with the label “Not for drinking!” The longer you drink distilled water, the higher the chances of you developing multiple mineral deficiencies as well as placing your body into an acidic state. Distilled water is often acidic because carbon dioxide in the air easily dissolves in the water.
Why Drinking Distilled Water is Making You Sick
- Distilled Water Can Lead to Mineral Loss in the Body.
Drinking distilled water disrupts your body’s mineral balance. In fact, studies have found that drinking distilled water can leach minerals from your body. This mineral loss can lead to osteoporosis, hypothyroidism, coronary artery disease, high blood pressure and more.
- Distilled water is acidic.
Normal distilled water has a pH of less than 7.0 and acidic because it dissolves carbon dioxide from the air. According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, “Distilled water, being essentially mineral-free, is very aggressive, in that it tends to dissolve substances with which it is in contact. Notably, carbon dioxide from the air is rapidly absorbed, making the water acidic and even more aggressive. Many metals are dissolved by distilled water.”
- Electrolyte imbalance.
Drinking distilled water causes your body to lose electrolytes it needs to stay hydrated like potassium, sodium and chloride because it needs to use them to process the water. Your body will leach electrolytes from your tissues in order to add them to the mineral-free water you are drinking.
- Drinking Distilled Water doesn’t hydrate the body enough.
To stay hydrated, you need water with minerals in order to replace what’s lost through sweat. Distilled water cannot make up for what expels from the body because all the natural minerals and electrolytes found in water have been removed.
