Various flavors of ice cream and frozen treats often include Red No. 3 and titanium dioxide – two additives linked to significant health risks. Both titanium dioxide and Red No. 3 are prohibited from nearly all food applications in the European Union. Here’s a rundown of typical components present in many store-bought ice cream brands. Get ready to be shocked by what seems to be a disregard for consumer health. Get ready to be furious that the FDA has sanctioned the use of these additives in our food for the benefit of the food processing companies.
Some of these ingredients are:
Butyraldehyde is a byproduct of butane, utilized in the creation of plasticizers, alcohols, solvents, and polymers. It possesses a scent reminiscent of almonds and is employed in the production of flavors.
Amyl acetate, commonly referred to as banana oil, serves as a flavoring component. It is also utilized in paints and lacquers, as well as in the production of penicillin.
Natural Flavors – The Food and Drug Administration says these have to be from real stuff, but they can be made in a lab. They might use lab-made stuff like solvents and preservatives to make flavors, but they don’t have to list these on the ingredients list.
Diethyl glycol is employed in the making of polyester resins and plasticizers, and acts as a component in paint solvents. In the food industry, it is used as an economical alternative to eggs for thickening ice cream.
Ethyl Acetate functions as a solvent in coatings and inks, and is utilized in the extraction of fats during food processing. It is also responsible for producing a pineapple flavor. The vapor from Ethyl Acetate has been linked to chronic damage of the lungs, liver, and heart.
Monoglicerides, Diglicerides, & Triglicerides are all mixtures of fatty acids, and may contain trans fats when these fatty acids undergo high-temperature processing.
Benzyl acetate is found in soaps, detergents, incense, oils, lacquers, polishes, printing inks, and as a solvent in plastics and resins. It is also used in the flavoring of food. Research suggests that it may be carcinogenic in rodents.
Propylene glycol is listed by the ATSDR as affecting the skin, kidneys, urinary system, and respiratory system. It is a synthetic liquid that has the ability to absorb water and is used in foods to retain moisture. It serves as a solvent for food dyes and flavors, as well as in plastics and paints.
Carrageenan, which comes from seaweed, is often used to help mix things together, keep them stable, or thicken them up. This might lead you to believe it’s a healthy choice. However, some studies have shown that it might cause inflammation, and folks with conditions like irritable bowel syndrome, which are known for causing inflammation in the gut, have said they feel better when they cut out carrageenan from their diet.
