Did you know that your conventional toothpaste is highly toxic? Most brands are loaded with dangerous chemicals such as Fluoride, Glycerin, Propylene Glycol, sodium lauryl sulfate, and triclosan. Fluoride is a by product of aluminum manufacturing. It can also be found in rat poisoning and industrial pesticide. Scary! And yet it is added to the majority of US water supplies using the rationale that it helps prevent dental cavities. Colgate Total, has recently been linked to cancer and many other health risks.
Fortunately, you can make your own toothpaste at home with just a few easy ingredients that you might already have in your kitchen. This homemade toothpaste can help heal cavities, gum disease, and whiten teeth.
Peppermint essential oil can help reduce anaerobic bacteria, which, if they proliferate, can cause gum disease.
Baking soda is beneficial especially if you have stains on your teeth. It helps remove discoloration since it can “release free radicals that attack teeth stains,” and “has a bleach-like action.”
Coconut oil: The beneficial antimicrobial properties of coconut oil are not new. A study published in 1972 found that lauric acid was one of the most effective fatty acids at stopping bacterial growth. Additionally, research have demonstrated that oil pulling, swishing coconut oil in the mouth, can reduce the accumulation of plaque, reducing your risk of gum disease.

I have read that there is a question mark over Stevia also.. for 40 years now, I have not used anything when I brush my teeth, because of what toothpaste does to you.
Anya
Hi Gaye! Organic Stevia is actually good for you. I buy mine from Trader Joes and I love it
E
There are many things you can use for teeth. Salt, charcoal, coconut oil and soda (be careful not to swallow too much soda) can all be used alone or together to help cleanse and heal teeth and bums.
Elizabeth
Stevia can cause diarrhea. It has a cleansing effect on the mucous membranes of the GI system. The diarrhea won’t hurt you, and your body will likely accomodate over time.
Anya
Hi Elizabeth! I have been using stevia for a long time, not just in a toothpaste recipe. My body processes it quite well.
Jake
The other thing about stevia is that it has contraceptive properties. If you are trying to conceive a child, avoid stevia.
Ann
Hi Anya, really excited to try this, thanks! May I know how long can we keep this toothpaste?
Anya
HI Ann! You can actually keep this toothpaste until you run out. None of the ingredients go bad.
Lindsay
Can I use a different essential oil?
Anya
Hi Lindsay! Yes, you can. Though tea tree oil and clove have the best antibacterial properties!

Hi Anya, I have read an article regarding Baking Soda. You failed to mention how often we are suppose to use this recipe. The article mentioned that BS can damage the enamel of your teeth if you use it regularly like the store bought toothpaste..So I would like to know How often do you suggest using your toothpaste recipe?
Anya
HI Helena! I used this toothpaste twice a day!
Mariah Runk
Is Stevia a requirement? That’s the only ingredient I don’t have. Thanks!
Anya
Hi Mariah! No, it’s not. It’s just for the taste especially for kids
Mariah Runk
Thanks!
Anya
My pleasure!
Mel
Hi Anya, I am intirgued by this article as I suffer from cavities. Have you ever had cavities and if so has this toothpaste helped aleviate them or prevent them?
Thanks so much!
Mel
Anya
Hi Mel! Thank you! I’ve had cavities and I don’t have them any more. But it’s a combination of both a diet and natural remedies. I’ve been on a keto diet for 2 years which excludes sugar and fructose. My teeth have not been healthier!
Joni
Uncle Henry’s brands remineralize your tooth, tooth Restoration.
Joni
My dental hygienist tells me baking soda is too coarse to use for brushing your teeth so I stopped using it.
Anya
Hi Joni! They do say that always and I don’t agree with that personally. Most toothpaste brands in fact add baking soda
Marilyn
Is this to be kept in the refrig?
Anya
Hi Mariyn! It depends on the amount you make. I usually make just enough for 2 days so I don’t have to refrigerate it
Judy
Hi I will try this a lot of my teeth are capped and the only thing that cleans them good is baking soda I’ll add the coconut and peppermint it should be better.thk.u judy
Madhavi
Anya, I have sensitive teeth. Can I use this toothpaste, twice a day, without worsening the condition ? I have read in Ur reply to one of the comments that you avoid fructose, does that mean you avoid all fruits ?
Anya
Hi Madhavi! I do avoid all fruit just because I follow the Keto diet. And yes, you can use this toothpaste. Try it out for a few days first.
Douglas
Can you also add activated charcoal in this recipe
Anya
Hi Douglas! Yes, you can definitely use it!
Sunnie
be careful when using charcoal….I read that it can permanently stain caps.
