Chemical Found in Microwave Popcorn Linked to Irreversible Condition “Popcorn Lung”

March 21, 2019 by Anya Leave a Comment

The microwave popcorn we all so love most likely has been treated with a long list of toxic chemicals which inlude insecticides, herbicides, fungicides and fumigants.

Microwave popcorn contains is loaded with all kinds of chemicals.  Just look a the 2013 Agri-Chemical Handbook on Popcorn.org

In fact, Chemical Found in Microwave Popcorn Linked to Irreversible Condition “Popcorn Lung.” It is an irreversible scarring of the smallest airways in the lungs caused by inhaling vapors of a buttery-flavored chemical that most manufacturers use.

Unfortunately, this disease is irreversible and can be life threatening.  It leads to lung inflammation, scarring and even limited airflow resulting in breathing trouble.

Microwave Popcorn Causes Lung Damage and More

1. Most microwave popcorn brands contain preservatives.

Many manufacturers use preservatives that are toxic and can cause health problems. For instance, some brands use proply gallate, a preservative that has caused tumors in lab rats.

2. A chemical coating used in microwave popcorn causes immune system and liver damage. A report from the FDA shows that a chemical coating used in microwave popcorn bags breaks down when heated into perfluorooctanoic (PFOA) – a  very carcinogenic chemical.

3. Genetically Modified Ingredients. Microwave popcorn ingredients are often GMO-derived. Most companies use common GMO ingredients like corn oil, soy oil, or soy lecithin.

4. Toxic Artificial Butter Flavoring (Diacetyl)

This chemical, called diacetyl, is extremely toxic; has caused  severe respiratory and lung problems and may even cause damage to the brain (source).

Fortunately, you don’t have to give up popcorn completely. Just stay away from microwave popcorn. Just make your popcorn the old-fashioned way, in a skillet.  Simply add grass fed butter and sea salt. Or,  you can use an air popper or a stove-top popcorn popper.
