Grandmothers Never Needed Shampoo for Healthy Hair—Here’s Why

Long before modern synthetic shampoos became mainstream in the 1930s, many women cared for their hair with simple oils, herbal rinses, and gentle scalp cleansing methods rather than detergent-heavy formulas. Early shampoos existed before then, but the real shift happened when synthetic surfactant shampoos became widely popular and changed the way people washed their hair.

Conventional Shampoo is Toxic

Conventional shampoos can become problematic when they rely on harsh sulfates, heavy synthetic fragrances, drying alcohols, and silicone buildup agents that prioritize foam and fragrance over long-term scalp health. These detergents can strip away too much of the scalp’s natural sebum, leaving hair dry, rough, and more vulnerable to frizz, split ends, and breakage, especially with frequent washing. Over time, this repeated stripping may push the scalp into producing excess oil as a rebound response, creating the frustrating cycle of greasy roots and dry ends that makes people feel like they need to wash even more often.   1. In a small bowl, mix all four ingredients until fully blended.
