Getting a clean oven can be a toxic task. In fact, did you know most commercial oven cleaners contain caustic, even poisonous chemicals. They are comprised of a cocktail of various chemicals, including lye, ethers, ethylene glycol, methylene chloride, and petroleum distillates.
Moreover, conventional oven cleaners are one of the most toxic products found in households according to the American Association of Poison Control (AAPCC). “Poison centers answer more than 3.6 million calls each year. That’s one call every eight seconds. According to the American Association of Poison Centers, children younger than 6 years old account for about half of the calls placed to poison centers.”
According to Samara Geller, senior research and database analyst for the Environmental Working Group, oven cleaners are especially hazardous if you don’t take the appropriate precautions.
“These chemicals are very harsh and can be caustic and corrosive,” Geller stated. “They can burn the skin and eyes, can blind, and can be corrosive to the respiratory tract. The vapors can irritate the lungs and can actually exacerbate or trigger an asthma attack. A lot of the chemicals used have been known to actually be capable of causing asthma.”
“Those warnings [on the labels] give you a pretty strong indication that maybe there are some pretty serious chemicals in this product,” Geller said. “I might want to think twice about using it.”
Fortunately, we can achieve a clean oven by using only natural ingredients.
