Two Main Vitamins that Can Help Boost Immunity, According to Nutritional Experts

Since a strong immune system is essential for enabling your body to fight infections, here are some immune boosting vitamins, according to nutritional experts.

Vitamin C Supports a Healthy Immune System

Vitamin C deficiency leads to an impaired immunity and higher susceptibility to infections. Vitamin C is a powerful contributor to immune defense since it is able to support different cellular functions of both the innate and adaptive immune system.

Studies find vitamin C is essential for the growth and repair of tissue all over the body.  Vitamin C acts as  an antioxidant fighting free radicals in the body which may help prevent many diseases.

Foods that contain high amounts of vitamin C include oranges, grapefruits, tangerines, strawberries, spinach, kale and broccoli.  It’s important to take vitamin C (either through food or supplements)  because your body doesn’t produce or store it.

Vitamin D3 also gives the immune system a boost.

Adequate levels of Vitamin D reduce your risk of infectious disease since it is able to strengthen our innate immune system. Vitamin D turns on key peptides in your immune system that trigger a strong anti-microbial response.

A study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, found that Vitamin D helped reduce risk of flu. Researchers conducted a double-blind placebo-controlled study where they gave the treatment group 1,200 IU  of vitamin D3 during the cold and flu season. The control group received a placebo. The subjects in the vitamin D group had a 58 percent reduced risk of flu.

Fortunately, our bodies can produce Vitamin D but it needs to be exposed to sunlight for it to do so. If you can’t be in the sun often, you should include some foods that naturally contain vitamin D3 such as beef liver, cheese, egg yolks, and fatty fish.

Mushrooms are one of the only good dietary sources of Vitamin D which makes them a particularly beneficial supplement for vegetarians and vegans. In fact, mushrooms can convert ultraviolet light from the sun into vitamin D.

Additionally, reishi mushrooms exhibit incredible  health benefits—antioxidant, immune-boosting. The compounds in reishi  interact with human cells at the microscopic level and are able to stimulate a natural process called autophagy in the body.
