It sounds to good to be true, but you can easily regrow everything from lettuce, onions to celery scraps in your apartment. Make sure to start with organic food. It’s fun, free, sustainable, and delicious. So don’t throw away those scraps but check to see if it’s something that you can regrow in your home.
6 Vegetables You Can Regrow from Kitchen Scraps
1. Green Onions
Green onions are probably the easiest vegetable to regrow. All you have to do is cut them from about an inch from the roots, and leave them in a glass of water. Set on a windowsill and keep the roots moist. In a few days, green shoots will emerge from the tops of the bulbs.
2. Celery
Cut off the celery, and leave about an inch or two from the base. Set the celery in a jar. Fill with enough water to submerge an inch of the root end. Place the jar in the good natural light for several hours a day. As new leaves start to sprout, leave them in a jar to gain thickness for about a week. You can plant the celery in potting soil or directly into your garden.
3. Romaine Lettuce, Bok Choy, Cabbage
Romaine lettuce is as easy to regrow as well. Leave the stump of the lettuce in a bowl and fill the water halfway. And once the leaves have regrown for a few days, plant in potting soil.
4. Potatoes
Don’t throw away old potatoes that have grown eyes, just cut it into a few pieces and plant it in the ground to grow new ones. Each eye can become a whole new potato! See the full directions here.
5. Leeks
Leeks regrow the same way as green onions. Simply leave about two inches of leek from the bottom, and place them in a bowl of water.
6. Garlic
You can regrow garlic from a single clove. Simply plant it with the root-end down. Place the plant in a sunny window. When the garlic bulb has produced shoots, trim them off so the garlic will concentrate on the bulb.
