Best Essential Oils for Relieving Anxiety

Did you know that in clinical trials, essential oils have been proven to help with depression and anxiety better than antidepressant drugs?  You may be wondering how essential oils can be so effective. This is because smells are carried directly to the brain where they act as emotional triggers. This is due in part to the fact that essential oils are fat soluble and the brain is made primarily of fat. There are two essential oils for Depression and Anxiety that Better than Antidepressant Drugs!

Additionally, essential oils are very effective in their ability to access  the brain due to the volatile compounds. These compounds are very small making them perfect to cross the blood brain barrier.  Once in the brain, essential oils can rapidly absorb and interact with receptors in the central nervous system to help support healing; and which is why they can fight depression and anxiety.

Two Essential Oils for Depression and Anxiety Better than Antidepressant Drugs

Bergamot

Bergamot oil is a great antidepressant because it can easily stimulate your brain. It creates a positive uplifting effect within the mind quickly and effectively.

Its sedative effect brings a calmer state of mind too.

A 2011 study found that applying a blended essential oil that includes bergamot to participants helps treat depression. Compared to placebo, there was a major decrease in those metabolic parameters and an increase in feelings of calmness and relaxation. In an aromatherapy study with rats, it exhibited  results similar to diazepam (Valium) when it came to reducing anxiety.

You can use bergamot oil by rubbing two to three drops into your hands and inhaling. Breathe in the oil slowly. You can also rub the oil on your feet and stomach, too.

Roman Chamomile

Chamomile oil is one the most effective oils for fighting stress and promoting relaxation.

The Depression Research Unit at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine performed a double-blind and placebo-controlled trial on 57 women and men with Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD) and depression.

For the group given the 220 mg dose of chamomile extract capsules, taken twice daily, they saw great improvement vs. placebo in the Hamilton Anxiety Rating scale.
